a)  If you’re starting out try and be realistic about the earning potential and ensure you have a backup income source such as a part time job just in case you’re business doesn’t get off to a flying start.  This will help reduce the money related arguments that are so common during the initial phases of setting up business ventures.

b)  Inform your partner of your goals and ambitions and let them know what sort of work will be involved and how much time you are likely to be spending trying to get where you want to be.  Doing this will help them realise how many hours you are likely to be working every day.

c)  Reassure them that the level of effort in beginning is going to be worth it in the long run once you are in a position where you can afford to start hiring people to do most of the work for you.

d)  Work out how much money is going to be saved on the other expenses you had when you were commuting to work every day such as travel costs, road tolls, parking costs etc and explain to your partner that this is now money you can be investing in your business.

e)  Update your partner on the level of progress you’re seeing, no matter how small or insignificant it may seem.  As the old saying goes – ‘every journey starts with a single step.’

f)  Be sure to get their opinion on certain aspects of your business such as website design or sales letter for instance.  Their view will not only affirm their involvement in your enterprise but will also give you some free market research.

g)  Make time to spend some non work related time together such as breakfast, lunch or afternoon breaks so that it doesn’t seem like you’re spending every waking hour devoted to your business.  Also, try not to talk about work too much either.

h)  Once your decision to work form home begins bearing some fruit, show your partner its potential and explain to them that it’s much easier to scale up on online business operation than an offline one.  Go out and treat them with your profits and let them know about the sort of progress you now think you can make since you’ve finally started profiting.

Balance is the key here as no one really wants to have to lose a family or a partner while gaining a business.  Earning an online income has many benefits if your day is structured correctly to incorporate the other important aspects of your life.
